RMR Retraining Program

The Remember Me Rescue training program was designed and implemented by Dallas and Donna Keen.   Many of the horses in the program have been retrained in these methods and are ready for almost anything when they leave Remember Me Rescue and begin their new careers.

Recently retired racehorses are used to a routine and most have been on this regiment for months, if not years: Up early, eat breakfast, be groomed, saddled, exercised, bathed, and cooled out.   Then it's time to eat again.
We feel like we can reduce stress by keeping their schedule similar to what it was the track.   We also incorporate turn out time and  integration to a herd.

For the first several weeks we only work on walk, trot, and easy obstacles to slow down the urge to rush.   We do not canter even on a lunge line.  They have been asked for speed enough at the track.    This is a crucial time for them to unwind and realize that rushing is no longer needed and they can take time to look around, smell the air, and learn to take a deep breath.  The days of being ask to do things fast is over.

Most of the horses at RMR are ridden Western and English.  Horses in the RMR program have been thoroughly evaluated and most are ridden regularly.   Horses that can not be ridden are handled on a regular basis, including hoof care, grooming, and training to improve basic ground manners. We strive to find what they are most comfortable with to help find them a home where they can be happy and thrive in a discipline they are best suited for.
